Retail Reconnaissance – Oct 20

This new blog feature  – “Retail Recon” for short – is a quick report on particularly interesting finds I spot on the retail scene.  This week I was picking up some charity donation samples at Soft Surroundings (which just happens to be headquartered about a half  mile from my house) and spotted this gorgeous tunic  ..

in a mix of subdued, slightly warm color tones.  Brick, deep blush, lavender and sage green in a geo banded print that seems to be in motion, this print will works with loads of solid bottoms.  Great for blondes, redheads and lighter brunettes.   Semi-sheer slightly crepe fabric.  Comes with coordinating jersey camisole.

At 40″ length, it’s great over skinny jeans or leggings.  Could even work as a dress on shorter gals.  Straight silhouette for Rectangle and Inverted Triangle bodies, yet soft enough to follow the curve of an Hourglass and to belt without undue bulk if you prefer.  In stores now, or order HERE.

Long cardigans are a signature look for me and one I often choose for my clients too.  The length adds a bit of drama to casual outfits, while remaining relaxed and comfy.  The slightly open center edges create a strong, elongating center front vertical element. And in many climates it can double as indoor/outdoor wear.   This Cozy Cabled Cardi from Jjill is a season-spanning cotton blend, available in a creamy version they call Soft Mushroom Heather that should flatter nearly any woman’s coloring depending on how it’s built into color combinations.  And the deeper Auburn Heather version should be magnificent  on gals with reddish brown hair.

Watch this space for more fashion finds each week in “Retail Recon”.

Thank you for this inspiration, Nancy! Even though I sew, I love your retail finds and inspirations. I get so overwhelmed in stores and cannot identify gems like you do. Thanks!

I know that many of my readers sew parts of their wardrobe, as indeed I do myself. But very few if any of us sew Everything in our closets. So these ready-to-wear suggestions should help0 everybody. And in the future I may even expand to make specific recommendations of great fabrics, just for my sewing audience.

I would like to second LC – this is very helpful topic, thank you for the post!
Question on long cardigans: is there any trick how to wear them under hip length ( shorter then cardigan) anoraks? Or I should plan to wear them only with knee-length outer layer? Thank you

In general you are going to want a longer over-layer so you don’t have cardigan showing below the hem of you coat or jacket. Of course many loger cardigans have enough heft to be an outerwear layer themselves, at least in moderate weather.
