Carol J. Fresia, Senior Technical Editor, Threads magazine –
Nancy’s book is the most empowering style guide I’ve read. Her practical advice on selecting colors, styles, and silhouettes that flatter you is outstanding, as is the plethora of information on wardrobe-building, the use of accessories, and all the many aspects of looking pulled together on a daily basis. Clothing care and maintenance, closet organization, and packing for travel are just a few more of the topics Nancy covers in helpful detail.
What I like most about Nancy’s message, though, is her belief that every woman is beautiful and deserves to—and can—look her best. It’s not about following trends or having your clothes speak for you, but rather about using clothing to enhance your individual looks. The book’s many before-and-after photos of non-professional models prove her point again and again. Finding points of connection between your physical characteristics and the clothes you wear brings harmony to your appearance, and with it authority and attractiveness.
As a sewer, I have benefited tremendously from Nancy’s guidance on selecting fabrics and planning a “core four” wardrobe. Equally, I’ve avoided costly mistakes now that I know which colors and prints won’t work for me. Shopping for fabric (and for ready-to-wear) is easier and more enjoyable, and I feel more confident in planning my outfits for work, weekend, or special occasions. Nancy may not have written this book for sewers, but I consider it a must-read for anyone who wants to create a wardrobe that is functional, beautiful, and expresses your personal style.
