I’m practically obsessed with cardigans these days. They polish an outfit without looking stuffy or feeling as confining as a jacket. Worn unbuttoned (and would you really wear one any other way?) they create an elongated, sleek silhouette. They give you 3-piece-combo options that multiply your mix-match exponentially. They span seasons, taking your summer garments into cooler weather. The fit is less precise, so shopping online for them isn’t such a gamble. And some great ones are on crazy sales right now, so it’s time to stock up – selectively, of course.
ALERT: It’s easy right now to get carried away with bargain prices – check this post for how to shop smart when markdowns threaten to sabotage your good judgement. But … back to cardigans …

I find V-neck cardigans are vastly easier to coordinate with a variety of under-layer styles and with accessories like scarves and necklaces. That’s why this Modern Girlfriend Cardi from Talbots (above) is a favorite season after season. The amazing markdowns – as low as $17.95 – are colors we typically think of for warm-weather. But notice how easily you can use a multi-color scarf (like these examples from our web store) to link them into combinations with darker pieces for your Fall wardrobe. Available in Misses, Petite, Plus and Plus Petite sizing, though not all colors in all size ranges.
The Jjill cardis above are also V styling, but less preppy without a banded closure. Again colors that can readily link into transitional and Fall outfits with coordinating scarves. Mostly available in multiple size ranges, so if the color you want isn’t in stock in your size, consider whether a different size range might work for you.
Obviously this final grouping isn’t about cardigans in the traditional sense, but linen shirts can function in the same kind of layering combinations. The they can also act as stand-alones or under-layers! Any shade from the “red” color family is extra-versatile because it works with nearly any neutral bottoms – black, of course, but navy, chocolate, gray, taupe, caramel, etc.
