Closet Storage Hacks
Your closet – maybe newly purged for the New Year – can serve you even better with these sneaky storage ideas, all of them bargain-priced and some of them entirely FREE:
Purses and clutches stay organized on a shelf if you use a file organizer to hold them in position. My photo includes a tote bag folded and rolled, and a red purse inserted upside down because the base was too wide for the slots of the organizer.
Earrnings stay in pairs and easily accessible in a pill organizer, an ice cube tray or egg carton.
Egg cartons are free – which is great – but I prefer this plastic pill organizer because I can snap it shut and toss it into a suitcase – no need to select which earrings to take along.
Stack similar garments using interlocking hangers – the ones with a loop below the hook. Great for a group of shells and tanks in a single neutral. I use it for jade green tanks – that’s one of my personal super-colors so I have a cotton knit one, a sweater-y one and a silky knit one.
Don’t have the right kind of hangers? Just slip a soda can pop tab over the hanger and it will work the smae way. In fact, I like this approach even better because it keeps the cascade shorter. Now it doesn’t drag the floor in my 2-tier closet arrangement.
Sorry – I didn’t snap a picture, but one of my clever clients mounted rows of crown molding on a bare wall in her closet and hangs high-heeled shoes from it – pretty as well as practical!

I have an ultra small closet and use every inch of it! For jeans I installed a short pressure mount closet rod perpendicular to and above the uppermost rod. It is positioned off to one side. I purchased some large S hooks and hang my jeans by a belt loop from those and suspend them on the rod. It holds quite a few and allows my rod space to be used for skirts and trousers.
S-hooks for jeans – very clever! Seems like a concept that could also work for tote bags hung by their handles or for boots with a binder clip attached to the upper edge. Thanks for sharing it.
Love the interlocking hangers idea, Nancy, and just in time. We just moved into a new house with inadequate double hanging, so I have put this idea to use with binder rings. For some reason I have a bunch of those rings that haven’t been used in years, and now this is a great way to use them and create more space in my closet! Thanks!
