Strategic Style

Welcome

Welcome to "Strategic Style".  It’s different from most fashion blogs.  It doesn’t feature pictures of how great I look in the hottest new trends for the season. Although I sometimes use my own wardrobe as an example, this blog isn’t really about ME at all.

It’s about YOU. It teaches how classic design principles can guide you to wardrobe choices that showcase the things that are fabulous about you.  That knowledge lets you shop strategically, dress effortlessly and feel confident about your appearance no matter your lifestyle, age, size or budget.

I believe it is the clothes’ responsibility to make you look good  -- not the other way around.  Each woman looks her personal best in clothes and accessories that have “points of connection” to her.  The more characteristics that exist in common between you and the things you wear, the more fabulous you will look. Your stuff will look more fabulous too, based on the design principle of repetition.

And things that connect with you will also connect with one another, right?  So you quickly develop more mix-and-match than you ever thought possible.  Shop less, spend less (or at least not any more) and feel great about how you look every day.

Then you can put wardrobe worries on the back burner where they belong, and march out the door every day with confidence to play your valuable role in the world – whatever that happens to be.  Welcome aboard!

Style Dilemma: I’m moving up to nicer quality clothes, but not sure about caring for them. Any tips?

Style Solution:  Explore these tips about steaming wrinkles away, ironing safely and efficiently and newer at-home dry cleaning processes. STEAMING is a great way to freshen a garment without a trip to the dry-cleaners. After a day’s wear, hang your garment and remove sit-down wrinkles and elbow creases with a strong but gently flow of steam. It’s also great for re-setting pleats and creases.  Steaming takes just moments, and avoids any scorching or shine that can develop when you use a conventional iron, especially on delicate fabrics.

Style Solution:  You’re right that a wrinkled, messy look isn’t very stylish.  To avoid it, choose the right pressing equipment and follow these simple, time-saving tips: The ideal iron produces a good volume of steam, has a sole plate that glides easily and feels comfortable – not too heavy – in your hand.  The Rowenta Effective Comfort DW2070 meets those criteria at an affordable $50 – about a third the price of their top model.  It gives you burst of steam feature, steams in a vertical position too and has automatic shut-off.

Style Dilemma: I’ve heard about at-home dry cleaning kits, but are they effective? And safe?

Style Solution:  Great News!  At-home dry cleaning kits like Dryel are a great way to safely remove surface soil, wrinkles and odors like perspiration, second-hand smoke and perfume from hand-washable and dry-clean-only clothing at a fraction of the cost of a trip to the cleaners. Dryel is a home dry cleaning product. Woolite has a similar product, and I’ve seen house brands in some of the drug and discount stores.

Corporate Makeover 2

This woman was making the standard mistake of believing that black and white is the universal choice for a professional wardrobe.  But because the contrast between black and white is so much greater than the contrast in her facial color pattern, the clothing was stealing all the attention – totally overpowering her.  We kept her black pants and top, but introduced colors in the cardigan and alternate jacket that echo her skin tone and hair highlights.  See how much more readily you can focus on her face, and therefore her communications?

This young professional woman wanted to retain her wash-and-wear hairstyle, minimal makeup and understated color choices.  But none of those constraints kept her from increasing her credibility with a more polished look.  A precision haircut and quick lesson in product for her curly hair made a big difference.  A 5-minute makeup routine brought her facial features into focus.  And a sleeker suit silhouette moves the focus from her feet to her face.  Also great example of looking totally professional in a color other than black!
