Strategic Style

Welcome

Welcome to “Strategic Style”.  It’s different from most fashion blogs.  It doesn’t feature pictures of how great I look in the hottest new trends for the season. Although I sometimes use my own wardrobe as an example, this blog isn’t really about ME at all.

It’s about YOU. It teaches how classic design principles can guide you to wardrobe choices that showcase the things that are fabulous about you.  That knowledge lets you shop strategically, dress effortlessly and feel confident about your appearance no matter your lifestyle, age, size or budget. Suzy needed to rebuild her professional wardrobe after a major weight loss.  She came from a traditional professional background and was reflexively choosing dark, ultra-conservative clothes that gave her a hard-edged look entirely at odds with her warm, collegial management style.  We introduced her to softer colors and more stylish separates that maintained her professional credibility and added a friendlier and more youthful energy.  You can see the difference in her face, can’t you?

Crystal was being considered for a big promotion to a client-facing position, and her mentor tactfully shared that a more polished appearance would significantly improve her chances for the job.  Solid colors, more structured silhouettes,  hair and makeup updates all contributed to her new look.  We helped her build an entire new professional wardrobe in a single weekend without breaking the budget.  Now she looks every bit the valuable employee she really was all along.

Amy orchestrated her own makeover – and was sweet enough to share pictures – based on concepts she learned from the LOOKING GOOD book and a workshop I presented in Washington DC.  What a difference!  She sewed both outfits, but the first one is overpowering her while the second is showcasing her instead.  The updates she put in place helped motivate her significant weight loss too.  Yes, it really is the same person, and she now has a closet full of the shaped styles and soft mid-tone colors that work so well on her.

Donna’s dominant upper body looks top-heavy in a white double-breasted jacket.  The jacket’s shaped fit makes it look too tight, while the baggy, too-long sleeves add visual pounds. Changing to a straighter jacket style in a darker color minimizes her top proportions, and the print skirt fills out her lower body to create a balanced look.  Wearing the jacket open over a bright red shell creates a vertical line that further slims her figure. You can see the new confidence in her expression and her body language, can’t you?

Christine has gorgeous warm coloring, a great head of hair and a willowy figure, but her basic black “uniform” didn’t do anything showcase those assets. The camel suede blazer warms up the look and the scarf visually connects the garment colors and her hair tones. Pairing the same jacket with a print skirt – which was already in her wardrobe – and a chocolate brown turtleneck adds richness the look and also repeats her eye color. Dark brown tall boots complete the coordination.
