Scroll down to see how improved color choices transform Christina's appearance compared to the photo on the left. Christina's entire face appears lifted and smoothed, simply by surrounding her with colors that are more in harmony with her deep, rich, warm personal coloring. Her hair looks more lively and filled with highlights and she appears younger and more rested.

Shary has strawberry blonde hair and a peaches-and-cream complexion. The "universal" black and white combination dulls her hair and throws a glare on her face that acccentuates fine lines and gives her an almost ghost-like pallor. But wait 'til you see the difference color can make.
Draped in best colors, her complextion is glowing, the golden red shows more richly in her hair, and you see stunning cheekbones instead of the gaunt look in the first photo.
By the way, we chose black and white for all the "not-so-good" examples because the fashion industry promotes it as universal, when in fact very few people are flattered by such extremely bright colors, especially in such a high-contrast combination.
Even as Marcy's hair has become silver, her look retains a distinct sparkle. But abrupt black and white is too strong even for her. When her hair was very dark she could have worn this combination just fine, but now a soft/bright look will be much more flattering.
These soft but saturated pinks and purples, mixed with shades of gray and an outline of black, are one example of the perfect balance for Marcy. The print and her face become one unified picture. See how focus moves from her nose (in the left photo) to her eyes (in the right one)?
I apologize for having only Caucasian examples here. The concepts apply equally to women of color, and next time I have my camera and willing models in the same place, I'll add some ethnic examples.
